We are working on an old refinery. The existing piperack was built in 1945 with Standard Oil Co. specs. We are unable to locate the spec.
By searching around, our best guess the material for steel pipe that time was either ASTM A53 or A7, the Fy= 35ksi.
Do you have AISC ASD 4th edition? I hope it's indicated in the AISC.
Thank you.

If you are a member of AISC, you have access to all of the historic Steel Construction Manuals (through the 7th edition) for free,
From what I see, the load tables for pipe columns specified that it is assumed the steel from which the pipe is made meets the properties of ASTM A7, if pipe is made from other steel safe loads should be suitably modified.

See below for A7 specified properties:

A53 Grade A has a yield strength of 30,000 psi and ultimate of 48,000 psi, but I don't know to what extent it has been produced or used for structural purposes.
