In the Canadian Standard CSA A23.3 1984 the commentary N13.4.9.1 explains that the structural integrity bars in two way slabs (such as flat slabs) act by "catenary action". In the 2014 edition, the word "catenary" is deleted (the clause is numbered N13.10.6 in this edition). See attached.

Question:

Why has the word catenary been eliminated? Do the bars act by some other means?

Also would be of interest what the ACI 318 says as to how the structural integrity bars act. I do not have a copy of ACI 318.
