Hello Everyone,

I need assistance to find the the strength (Shear) of a weld as shown in the attached drawing.It is a 1/4 fillet weld to attach a
L 5" x 3 1/2" x 3/8" to an I beam by using a L 4" x 3" x 3/8"-6" Long. I have available to me a "Manual of Steel Construction, Eight edition". Please advice as appropriate and thank you in advance

For a rectangle of weld 6" tall, 4" wide, and pure shear, (not accounting any flexural effect from the load being applied at a hinge out of the weld plane, that would reduce the limit Pu)

C1 1 for E70

D=2 assume only a face side D of 2/8" can be acommodated on the lip of the 3/8" angle

L=6

fi·Pn=50.52 kip as per AISC

Any concurrent bending action causing stress in the weld would reduce this limit (factored) value.

This in Pilkey's is made at service level for an allowable shear stress at the welds, by a spherical interaction of the shearing stresses along x y and z, for the line shape and width the throat.

tau_u=sqrt(tau_x^2+tau_y^2+tau_z^2)

known the stresses you know the safety factor.

 
The weld looks a lot stronger than the single bolt.
 
where is the Table 8.40 vol II 2nd ed. from? I am not clear on the variables given. Please advise
