Is it posible to measure the straightness of a rod by chucking it in a lathe with an indicator in three different locations? I believe checking runout or total runout is not the same thing as straightness.

I check a rods straightness on a surface plate with feeler gages, on a CMM, or on an indiron.

It's not the same thing but it can be useful none the less.

Our receiving inspection bar "straightness" specification defines 2 support points and 3 measurement points with a few qualifying notes about "short kinks" etc. Can only be used down to a size that does not droop excessively.

I would not use it on a precision part.

The rod I am talking about is to check the alignment of 2 bearings 4 inches apart within .001in. The alignment rod feature numbers are already established.

plain or ball?
Is this an axial straightness exemption from perfect form at MMC?
