Heres the problem, I need to analyse the pressure capacity of a 4.5m diameter concrete shaft 30m deep- ie the shaft goes from ground level to 30m below ground level. The shaft acts as a pressure chamber in severe flood conditions as part of a storm water sewer system. Modifications to the sewer network mean that the shaft could be subject to a maximum 2.9 Bar (290 kPA)of pressure in sever storm conditions. The structural capacity of the concrete shaft is 0.6 Bar (60kPA) I need to calculate the resistance gained from the surrounding soil. I havent done this type of problem before so Im looking for a worked example from maybe a text book or other publication or guidance on what formula I can use. I have the following soil strength parameters for the surrounding soil: Cohesion, Angle of internal friction, Stiffness, poissons ratio and density.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
