Steel Grate for Detention Vault Lid 1

Got a situation where the local fire marshall has specified that the access grate for a concrete detention vault needs to support the weight of a ladder truck outrigger pad.

The pad generates a load of 45,000 pounds over a 5.5 square foot area, or about 8 ksf.

Aside from the steel support frame top be designed, does anyone know of any steel grating that is currently manufactured to handle this loading? It is an exterior application in a traveled way.

Don’t you mean grating on a gridwork of beams at 3 or 4' o/c, which can support 45k? By the way who are they going to detain down there, so valuable that they need a vault?

This is a stormwater detention vault and the grate is to be able to be removed in order to lower a small bobcat into the tank to clean it. The opening is 5 feet by 15 feet.

The grating still has to span between the steel beams, so it will see the load, just like a concrete slab would.

Isn't structural engineering interesting?

Just a thought if you can't find appropriate grating -
How about some removable I-beams that could be bolted in and removed when necessary. Cover them with grating that will now span the lesser distance.
