Steel frame design in India

We are likely to be undertaking a design for a building in India. This will be a first for us as our previous projects have been in the UK and Middle East.

The building will be steel framed but our preliminary research shows that Indian Standard rolled steel sizes only go up to 600mm depth for beams. We will need beams of 800 to 1000mm depth (We have done some basic calcs using UK steel sizes).

Can anyone advise what is the norm for India. Do we use sections made up of plates or imported steel sections?

We are currently obtaining the Indian design codes and will be contacting an Indian partner to assist in the work but it would be good to understand what this project will entail before we commit to the immpossible!

pba,

If the beam sizes are not available I recommend you consider plate girders. You have to be careful of the quality so check that the fabricator has semi-automatic welding machines. He should also have WPS and PQR for the plate and electrodes he will use.

STAAD HAS INDIAN SECTIONS DATABASE. YES, THEIR W SHAPES ARE UP TO ABOUT 690 MM DEEP, BUT THEIR IW SHAPES ARE UP TO ABOUT 1700MM DEEP.

Now a days good quality rolled sections meeting European profiles are avaible in India.Jindal Steel and Power Limited is one of the manufacturers.Alternatively you may use the built up sections made out of plates.

Keep an eye on your geotech stuff... the soils can be wild and wonderful... Dik

Folks,

Thank you for the advice. It looks that sections fabricated from plate steel are quite common and this is likely to be our strategy. We will need to ensure quality work, especially at welds.

Dik - Ah yes - ground conditions. Currently we don't have a defined site. All I know is that it is meant to be in the middle of the country!

I'm told the climate is hot with a monsoon season. I've never dealt with monsoons before. I'm expecting to grade the site away from the building and provide a big trench round the outside. Not sure where the water will go after that, or what it will do to the ground onthe way...

Some areas of India get 800" of rainfall a year... and that's not with a missing decimal point... Did a 747 hanger in Nepalgung... mean temperature 40degC and relative humidity 99%. The site rep said that you could watch stuff rot in front of you...
