Could someone please tell me what choices there are in materials for steel beams (I-beams, angle irons). I am trying to select the right material for needed for a project. By knowing the exact material I would then be able to find its yield stregth. Thanks a lot.

Here are some of the more common types.
ASTM A36, A572, A588, A242, A441, A992, A709, A576, A618, A387, A514, A668.

Hope this helps.

The most commonly available structural steel materials depend on the shape you select.

For W-Shapes, it's A992 (50 ksi yield)and A36 (36 ksi yield) .

For M-Shapes and S-Shapes, A36 and A572 grade 50(50 ksi). NOTE be careful - A572 comes in other grades that have different yields).

etc. See a "Manual of Steel Construction" from the AISC for more.

And remember, a little knowledge is dangerous . . .
