Static Switcher

Hi

Hoping to find an answer for a question - UK based and looking for a static switcher - We have had issues with UPS units failing and the output dropping. When mains is restored there is no output from the UPS so Id like to fit a static switcher to automatically fall back on the availiable source reverting back when the UPS has been repaired. The current isnt any more than around 5 Amps but would like the unit to be small. Anyone have any ideas or recommendations. I had thought about a relay but that would have the coil powered all the time and wondering what the reliability is for a coil being powered on 24/7

No problems at all with such a relay and life. Not an issue. Use a relay if it is suitable in other respects. And for extra extra long coil life, use a DC poered relay.

If you need the speed of operation of a static switch then Socomec and XP Power are worth a call in the UK. Won't be cheap though.

Dont need speed or anything basically a long life switch - when UPS is on and okay it supplies a control panel with 240v when the UPS fails and drops out the supply switches over to another source and remains on that source until the UPS output is restored.

Go with Gunnar's solution, maybe a contactor instead of a realy though.

Did a few proposals on this looked at an opto coupler set up holding a relay off which when the output failed it allowed the panel to revert back to the raw mains and indicate an alarm.

Never went with that idea though instead of working around the issue we deiced to swap out the UPS units with new ones that had replaceable batteries etc.
