I am looking for anyone having a bad experience due to changing from 301 to 201 stainless in thicknesses in the .035 to .045 range, specifically due to a cycling load.

You need to be more specific in stating your question if you expect an intelligent response from the experts in this forum. What is your application? What is the environment in which this material is used? What types of stress are generated, what are the loading conditions? Is the failure mode fatigue? What is the part geometry? Are there any significant stress concentrations? You need to provide us with a more complete description of the problem.

If it was a straight swap (all other processing/use parameters the same) I would think the problem would be attributable to a difference in the stress-strain curve or a corrosion process.

Let us know what you find out!

Was the stuff just annealed or was it work hardened?
