No. 304 and 316 SS has minimal resistance to HCL and will suffer severe chloride corrosion. Some of the duplex stainless steels are somewhat resistant but still not a good choice. Why not try something like a HDPE float?

If the required level range can tolerate the % error in predicted density, why not use a remote sealed dp cell ? And if the vapor space is always close to or at atmospheric, further simplify this to a remote sealed PT to infer level?
Probably the issue will be that they might be controlling directly with the float switch. It might be operating directly into a pump circuit, or a level alarm or whatever or it may be providing a digital input to a PLC.
If you change to a Pressure transducer this will be an analogue instrument (4-20ma or 0-10v or similar). This could require a change of wiring but might be able to be programmed into a PLC to stop/start/alarm etc at a particular tank level(ma or voltage level). However if it is working directly in a motor or alarm circuit there will need to be some sort of analogue to digital convertor to change an analogue to a switch function.
However following along your line though you can get units not unlike a PT which are in fact an adjustable pressure switch which may well do the job required. But many operators prefer a "float" switch because they can clearly see what is happening.
