I apologize for the simple quesiton. What does spur gear mean? Does it just mean the ridges run parallel to the shaft (as opposed to helical gear)?

Is not "Spur Gear" commonly used to refer to the smaller of two gears in a gear set.
 
I would normally call the smaller gear a pinion (vs bull).

But if that is common terminology I would like to hear.

electricpete is correct the small one is the pinion the large one is the gear.
 
Clearly my memory (or clearly my lack of it) did not serve me well.
