Spherical heads are commonly used in high pressure heat exchangers as tube side chambers, but as far as I know I'm not able to calculate them by Compress. Is there any hope to get this feature to Compress soon?

eeromatti,

COMPRESS currently provides option to specify hemispherical heads as bonnet end closures for the tube side channels. Is this what you are referring to?

If not, please write to me at support@codeware.com and provide more details. A picture (graphic or CAD drawing) would be helpful in this case. Thank you.

ASME section UHX does not address the type of construction with formed head attached directly to the tubesheet. This section assumes that the channel cylinder provides some support for the tubesheet; UHX-13.5.10 requires a minimum length of channel cylinder when integral with the tubesheet.

Thus it is not possible to model this construction and follow the rules of ASME UHX. COMPRESS does not provide any other method of analysis for this construction.

Can anyone offer suggestions for a relevant design code for this type of construction?

UHX-13.5.10 says that channel integral must have uniform thickness of length of 1.8sqrt(Ds*ts). It does not say that shape of channel must be cylinder. And equations for (longitudinal) stresses in channel (UHX-13.5.10 again) are valid for hemispherical channel too.

It seems that addenda 06 introduces hemispherical channel and because of that I'm sure Compress will support it too someday!
