Hello,

what kind of magnetic speed sensor we have to use to monitor the speed of an engine flywheel connected to the crankshaft? the sensor will be mounted on the area of the gearbox.

i guess we have to use a crankshaft speed sensor and defenitely not camshaft speed sensors

any ideas?

thanks

You can use whatever you want, so long as there is a deterministic relationship between what you are measuring and the actual engine speed. A magnetic sensor is only appropriate if there is a some timevariation or change in magnetic field as a function of engine rotation.

Google "Geartooth sensor" or "magnetic tachometer sensor". There is a lot of these made for both the OEM and aftermarket, and by gauge companies. For years it has been a common method of adding a tach to a diesel engine.
