Building a pier/dock using 20' sticks of L4x4x1/4" steel (left over from other job..free). How far can I span using the L4x4x1/4 as beams between piers (wood in mud). Decking specs are 50 psf total (10 dead and 40 live load). Will this support a 2' cantilever?

Do I need to double the beams (one on each side of the pier)?

Decking joists will attach to the beams with decking on top.

thanks ray

Sorry, but, for liability reasons, and others, we do not do structural engineering for specific projects in this forum.

It would be best for you to contact a local structural engineer for the answers to your questions.

you could still at least outline a simple strength calculation

@loki3000, if there was a such a thing!

An angle is non-symmetrical and a lack of understanding of the consequences of this can lead to problems. With one leg vertical, and a vertical load, the angle deflects downward and sideways

@rlw030, If you must try this, do a web search for beam theory.

Michael.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.
