Our company will soon be testing components that will go in a jet engine. The test rig will be run at 36,000 RPM by a 40 HP electric drive. 40,000 RPM electric motors are quite expensive. Could this be done with a speed increasing gear box? There are several possible combinations of motor speeds and gear ratios that might work. The most obvious would be a 3600 RPM motor and a 1:10 gear but even a 20,000 RPM motor and a 1:2 gear would be possible.

Does anyone know of a source for such a gear box.
Best Regards

Routers will do 24000 rpm but only 5hp?

Honda motorcycles – 20,000+ rpm engines could be powered from the output shaft (chain?) back to the engine - probably 40+ hp

But what you really need is a small personal turbine like this:

87 hp @77,000 rpm

Interesting problem.

Driving it off some sort of turbine, perhaps the exhaust side of a suitably large diesel turbocharger? that should handle the required output Rpm and torque easily enough.

A large conventional electrically driven high pressure air blower might then supply the flow. It would be large and power inefficient, but it would be fairly straightforward and possibly the lowest cost option, especially if secondhand parts are used.

A direct drive electric motor will always be preferable, but being a "special" it will not come cheap.

Damage from accidental over-speed is always possible, a turbine would probably tolerate that better than an electric motor, and would be far cheaper to replace if it ever did "let go".
