Solenoid Hydraulic cartridge valves vs universal

Hi all,

Could someone help explain or point me in the right direction,

We are designing a hydraulic circuit and one manufacturer has stated they will use solenoid type cartridge valves and the another manufacturer would use universal valves.

What are the differences? I know what a screw in solenoid cartridge valve is but a universal valve?
