Could you please help me in finding a software to analyse cable stayed bridges. Does anybody know any websites in which I can download one for free.

Thanks.

How would you like to analyse these bridges?

See faq569-1083 for details on how to make best use of Eng-Tips.com

cheaply ?

but seriously, i'd think cable stayed bridges are quite a difficult problem to solve (being highly redundant). that being said, I'd think almost any FE package would be able to do the job.

good luck

Do the cables need to be tension only so that when the structure is loaded any cables in tension that unload will?

There are a lot of inexpensive or even free FEA programs that will handle simple structures with linear analysis, but to do it right you really need non linear.

dmacx is right about the non-linear component to the problem; the stays would be preloaded in tension.

would you be able to linearise the problem by applying a tension load to the stays, applying the required loads to the bridge, then checking the stays are still in tension ?

I am a GTStrudl user and usually attend the User's Group Meetings and there are always bridge design presentations where static and dynamic analysis with nonlinear behavior. I have seen examples of cable stayed bridges being designed. GTSrudl is neither free nor for the casual user, but it can handle most bridge/building analysis and design.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Hello,

disclaimer: I never did any analysis of bridges and this is indeed far from my field...

0.002 Euro worth: why not look at Straus7 ? I saw from brochures and website that they have several references about bridges / cable stayed bridges, etc...
Warning: it's not free at all!!!

Bye.

Man, I hadn't realized how much the dollar had devalued vs the Euro! Two cent (-iDollars) is now the equivalent of two milliEuros! [tongue]

Dear Emma123:

I suggest you SAP2000 Plus version with bridge modeler and stage construction module. Though this is not free but it is among the best to do the job. You can find more details on their site
Good luck
