Hi,

I have been designing retaining walls and abutments following chapter AASHTO LRFD 10.6.3.4.
I am using equation Rr= Phi*Rn= Phi1*R1 + Phiep* Rep

Rn : Nominal Load
R1: Nominal sliding resistance = V * tan(angle of friction) ----- V is total vertical Load ( Dead Load, Live Load, etc)
Rep: Nominal Passive force

Now R1 and Rep are multiplied by resistance factors.

My question is about "R1" which is a nominal laod---> R1=V *Tan(alpa). IS 'V' representing the total factored vertical load ( dead load multiplied by 0.9, live load multiplied by 1.75) or does represent unfactored load?

the nominal term means that R1 should be unfactored.

Thank you for your help,
