What guidance is available for sizing welding leads used for Carbon Arcing from 600 to 1000 amps.

Come back with how long a lead you are going to need and what kind of duty cycle. Also the open circuit voltage of the machine.

This many amps is quite hazardous to have laying around. I’ve seen some pretty bad flash burns on a whole lot less amps.

What size gouging rod are you planning to drive?

Use Table 4-37 from the Lincoln Procedure Handbook Of Arc Welding for recommended cable sizes.

1/2 inch carbon electrode, 600A min.-800A max., 4/0 welding cable-200ft. max. grd. & electrode combined, max. ocv.-85Volts DCRP, 40-50% max. duty cycle.

You can always double the cables. Keep them as close to the same length as possible. As you have stated it's the total length of both +/- that is considered.

Just curious how are you going to get the 800 or so amps needed?
