silica in steel

Are you referring to element silicon or silica as an inclusion found in steel. Silicon is definitely a helpful additive controlling the dissolved oxygen levels,strengthening the ferrite etc. But silica as an inclusion is certainly undesirable and its size and distribution needs to be controlled. This can occur due to poor refractory lining in the furnace or ladle or bad molding techniques.
