Is Silicant rubber sealant OK at -40C?
(the standard industrial stuff)

Depends what type of silicone sealant you are using. The one we spec is good for -60 C. Most aircraft grade sealants are good to at least -40 C.

Three:

Group 1 are the ones that work properly

Group 3 are the ones that don't work at all

Group 2 are the ones that are between Groups 1 and 3.

You will probably end up using Group 2

Since this is the "Automotive engineering - other topics" forum, I assume that you're using it on an engine and that engine may be gasoline (?)
If so, it's important to only use silicone sealing materials that are specifically intended for engines as any free silicone that manages to get into the oil or fuel systems can initiate a degradation or even failure of the HEGO.

No, it will be used just to stop a nylon cover dropping of a nut.
For info the silicone I got is from Beal (UK) Ltd. It is called Trust Seal R.T.V silicone seal. Colour : Black. Temp Range : -60 deg C to +250 Deg C
