We are currently reburbishing a customers gearbox not manufactured by ourselves.
The situation is we have a shaft onto which a gearwheel is shrunk on.
The trouble is that the shaft has a 1:32 taper. What I need to know is info about the torque it will be able to transmit and also, how to install the gear. I have a feeling it is oil injection but could it be forced on with hydraulic rams.
Thanks
Mike

Is that only a shrink fit, or is there a keyway in the shaft as well?
I remember doing those calcs once while not long out of school, I'd have to dig deep to find 'em. (but since I never throw anything away, so I'm pretty sure I'd find 'em - eventually). If no-one replies I'll search for those notes. However, as I remember they were rather straight-forward, nothing out of the ordinary, I did them without consulting anyone else, so they couldn't have been too hard....

Kind of hard to do a computation without numbers. Are you looking for the mathematical model?

Whe used shrink fit in our maintenance garage for several machine assemblies by using solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) successfully. Obviously you know how much intereference that you have between the shaft and gear hub at room temperature so you should be able to calculate shaft shrinkage, stresses and torque. Any ME or machinery handbook will have the necessary formulae.

I'm sorry unclesyd but your link dod not work, never mind.
Ok here are some more details. The start of taper is 150mm dia end of taper is 146.25 dia over a distance of 123mm. There is no keyway.

The link didn't work because not all of it got formatted as a hyperlink. It's on 2 lines. Add the "766/chapter07.pdf" to the end and it works.
