Should rotor earth protection relay of an alternator 45 MW trip the machine when activated?

We determined within my company that we perform a normal shutdown on a rotor ground fault rather than a “trip.” Our rotor circuit are ungrounded so the first ground fault doesn’t cause a large current to flow, but a ground fault could be indicative of a impending and more severe event, so we take the machine offline in a low stress manner and require an inspection.
