Gentlement,

We have a shell plate 11 M (L) x 2 M (W) x 25.7 mm (T). The material is A516 Gr. 70. There are 12 " and 14" shell nozzles welded to the shell plate. The tank is built as per API 650 code.

The question is how many thermocouples need to be attached on this shell plate for stress relief purpose ?

There must be one nozzle to shell welding area. There must be another one on the shell plate. Any other ?

ASME Section VIII under UW-40 does not clearly specify for tank shell plate stress relief.

See UW-46(c). It's a best engineering judgement call.

I don't believe API-650 specifies one way or the other.

Don56,

Yes I have read UW-40(C) but there is no specific detail for my case.

JStephen,

It is right API 650 does not specify how many and where the thermocouple shall be placed on.
