Sheave Brake 1

I am looking for some help in finding a simple way to secure a large (44" dia.)sheave drive against rotation in either direction while work is underway around the drive. There could be 70,000 in-lbs torque on the sheave. Has anyone ever somehow secured the belts to the sheave to prevent rotation?

I think the brake you are looking for will be very similar to what is used on the drums of large winches especially marine types. Two type of brakes are employed, a band brake and a hydrastatic brake (in the hydraulic motor). Do a search on the net for winches. Im sure you will find some good ideas. Lex Fabrizio

Thanks for your reply but the machine I am working with already has a band brake on the other end of a double extended shaft having the sheave on one side and the brake on the other. What I am looking for is a way to add redundant braking for additional safety should the primary brake fail.

Can you wrap it several times with the chain of a long come-a-long (over some dunage) and pull down against some anchor. Similar to how a trucker would tie down a round drum with chain and a "boomer"

This is the sort of approach I am looking for but in this case I can only get to the lower 1/3 of the sheave because of the belt cover. I have seen others tie one of the sheave spokes tied to ground with a boomer and chain but worry that if the spoke is at 6:00O'clock and the chain is anchored directly below the spoke then there could be very high loads in chain should a torque be applied to the sheave.
