Most material handbooks does not show a value for shear stress. I read somewhere that in a steel material, shear stress = yield stress/2 (approx.). Does anyone know if this is true or not. How about wood and plastic? Any comments are appreciated.

Shear stress value is usually 60% of the specified yield stress. This applies to metals. I can't help you with wood or plastic.
