I am in the process of designing a temporary wastewater sedimentation (settling tank) for a coal fired power plant. I am trying to get more information of particle size and settling velocity for coal combustion by-products. The data available based on literature review almost always suggests that it is dependant on the type of coal and the efficiency of the combustion process. Also, I was able to glean some data suggesting that particle size is less than 10 µ m with a varying range from 0 to 15 µm. Can anyone direct me on information regarding settling velocity information and their variation for various seasons (summer and winter) for Coal Combustion by-products, particularly coal ash and fly ash? Any particular column tests for the same processes will also be of help to me.

Thanks for your info. You are sooooo correct, and you gave me a good chuckle this morning, kind of a "no s$&*" chuckle (no offense....you really are correct, and I needed the laugh this morning). I guess I should have shared that my client's plant is 54 years old and that I'm working with a system that United Conveyor Corporation designed for my client over 50 years ago. It does take up little space with the components used, and is low maintenance, but boy oh boy is there a LOT of water used. That doesn't even include the water used for the bottom ash!!! Considring the age of the plant, and the fact that bailing wire and duct tape is used to keep it operating, there is also no hope of retrofitting a pneumatic system in this plant. Just gotta work with what's there.

Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for all your input. I am still in the process of characterizing the influent. I did contact USFilters and Enprotec on temporary clarifiers and the maximum capacity they have is 1000 gpm (1.44 MGD) which in my case will need 4-6 tanks. At this point, I am really trying to nail down the actual flows for the actual months of construction which might occur in the Fall and cold weather might set in and affect clarifier performance. Please keep us posted on this thread on your progress and contractors/manufacturers who specialize in equipment required for what you are trying to do.
