Using ASME VIII Div1 - the weld sizes can be determined by using the rules on sketch (i) of Section UW-16. But is there an actual calculation method used to 'design' the weld size anywhere, as an alternative?

stephenebrady, see UG-41, UW-15.

Note the rules of UG-41 cannot be used to reduce weld sizes below minimums required elsewhere.

SnTMan, thanksfor your reply.

Are you saying that even if I have a calculation to size the fillet welds, and it produces a smaller fillet than UW-16 suggests, I still need to use the UW-16 size as a minimum?

stephenebrady, yes the language of UW-16 seems pretty specific to me. There are occasions when the UG-41 calculations show the minimums of UW-16 to be inadequate.

Mike
