Our business team is looking at using servo presses instead of pneumatics / hydraulics for an assembly operation. We feel that the this would elimunate the need for additional error-proofing (i.e. load monitoring, part presence, etc.)
What is the downside to use of these presses? What are the failure modes, mean time to repair, etc. compared to other methods?

I have designed several servo presses. These were to replace an older hydraulic press design.

There are many positives of using a servo over hydraulics/pnuematics. But the negatives are cost and the mechanicals and controls are more complex. Depending on the design of the press, the stroke can be a limiting factor on a servo. And the maintenance stroke is often limited. And regards to maintenance, the servo requires much less than hydraulic.
