section view in 3D viewport

Hi, anyone know how to exclude parts/assemblies from being sectioned in the 3D viewport? I've seen it done in Solidworks but can't see how it might be done in Inventor 2014.

Also, in Inventor, I've read that when you're in part priority mode and you select a part, the assembly that the part belongs to should be highlighted in the browser. Is this true? It doesn't seem to work for me. Would be really useful in finding parts within the browser.

It's a bit round-about, but you can create a section plane, sketch a circle around the parts you want sectioned, and extrude-cut the circle through the parts. This will cut away all of the parts it passes through, but you can go back to the item in the browser, and "+" expand the details of the Extrude item. It will list all of the parts that were cut by the extrude. Each can be "excluded" with a right-click.

For your second question, every part can be selected in the view window, then, with a right-click you will see the context menu. At the top is the "star" of quick access commands, above the longer list below. One of the items in the quick list (to the lower left IIRC) is "FIND IN BROWSER".

PS You can do the reverse by clicking on the part in the Browser, and selecting "FIND IN WINDOW".

The cross-section seems like a good work around but I'm not sure it's workable. I've just tried it on a medium sized assembly and it seems to take a lot of processing. It's useful to know though and I may well make use of it for small assemblies.

I've only recently been exposed to Solidworks and it's making me realise that Inventor is so much more limited in some areas of functionality. Again, with cross-sections it would be great to be able to show some parts not sectioned and in transparent. Solidworks has this feature and I think it is really useful for helping navigate a model.

On your second point, yes I this method, but again it's a bit of a faff. Not sure why the assembly that the part belongs to can't just be highlighted.
