Sealing of Water Based Paint

I am seeing an excessive leakage (6ml/hr) when sealing a Water Based Primer Paint. Expected to be 1 to 2 ml/hr with Sic v Sic.

IMO you look to face lapping when you have a constant leakage rate which is high.
However a question has been raised where I have been asked if the paint 'particles' suspended in the water base can
get in between the faces.
The theory being that the particles will tend to the core of the seal/shaft as the heavier water centrifuges outwards.

Any thoughts on this guys and gals ?

Im not well up on paint but I believe the paint is a water based paint. Its a primer for automobile spraying.

The paint is obviously a liquid but when you pour an amount of it on a surface in a blob, it 'dries' to a putty sort of consistancy which can be pulled away from the surface and goes even softer with body temperature.

To the touch it does not feel abrasive.

I will return to the pump today to check the barrier fluid loss over the weekend.

Since writing the first post I had visited the pump where I topped up the level AND closed a valve which had been left open by the user. We may be loosing fluid past the check valve the other side of this valve !!

We will see.

Paint is a tricky one. If I were to spec out a seal for this application I'd use a plan 53 using a process compatable barrier fluid to keep the paint from getting between the faces. Possibly using a bellows seal to keep springs from clogging.
