I like using previews but in many cases it greatly increases save time. I have tried some different options but nothing seems to be efficient. I would not think creating a small preview image should take very long. I like preview but if it cannot be sped up then I'm going to have to leave it off because the extra save time is simply not worth being able to look at a part preview. Any suggestions on how to speed it up?

Have you actually compared the times between saving files with or without the Preview capture option toggled OFF?

Yes. I took an average of four parts saving with preview on and and average of four parts saving with preview off. The parts are medium sized, for me, and assemblies take longer. The time increase is 50% with preview on. Large assemblies can be a real bear but I do not have data on those because it appears parts that were created with preview on will keep making previews even if customer defaults are turned off. So I would have to complete an entire project assembly with preview off to attain assembly performance data.

Not an earth shattering problem; I'm just looking for any suggestions. I'm always looking to speed up my work flow anywhere I can and within reason.

The part preview options are "part level" meaning that changing the customer default options will not affect existing parts. You can change a part's preview options by going to: File -> properties -> preview

You might try changing the preview creation option from "on save" to "on demand". This way you still get the benefit of a preview, but it only updates when you tell it to.

Thanks, I will try it out.

Also in Customer Defaults, at...

Gateway -> General -> Part

...set the 'Model View Preview' option to either 'On View Save' or 'On Demand'.

I just noticed noticed using Part Preview will give me back previews in a Windows Explorer window; I missed that. That's super valuable to me.
