SAE J429 materail spec or bolt spec

Does SAE J429 specify a material properties and bolt properties or just bolt properties. (i.e. can I purchase a non threaded SAE J429 rod or would it be a ASTM AXXX steel) I seem to get conflicting responses from coworkers. Any help would be appreciated.

SAE J429 explicitly and exclusively applies to "externally threaded fasteners". So, I don't think you would be likely to find plain rod specified as SAE J429 compliant.

As eth explained, SAE J429 is a standard for externally threaded fasteners. You will need to use a different standard if you want to specify a bar or rod or discrete part with certain requirements for mechanical properties, chemical composition, etc.

Thanks for the quick response. Do you happen to know what alloy is used for SAE J429 grade 5 bolts? I could use a copy of the spec. I am trying to get approval to purchase it, but as usual that seems to have hit a dead end. Thanks

The requirements for Grade 5 fasteners are the following:

a) medium carbon steel (medium carbon steel w B or alloy steels also acceptable) with 0.28-0.55 mass percent C.

b) quenched & tempered with minimum tempering temperature of 427 C.

c) P = 0.030 max & S = 0.050 Max

Typical grades are SAE 1035 and 1541.
