Hi Everybody:

Had a question regarding material callouts in ASME B16.5 Code. I have a 2500# flange that is made of SA-336 class 5A material, but the material is not listed in 16.5 in any of the matieral groups (at least I did not see it). I guess my two question are:

1) Are you allowed to use SA-336 material when making a 16.5 2500# flange, and

2) How do I put SA-336 class 5A into one of the material groups in 16.5?

Thanks!

There is a provision in ASME B16.5 to permit use of dual or multiple material marking. I believe your best option would be to certify the SA-336 to SA 182. Look at the scope of SA 182, SA-336 is mentioned for other applications and large components under SA-182. Once dual certified to SA-182, you can use this material per B16.5.

As per clause 5.1 of ASME B16.5, Equivalent materials may be used provided that the ASME specifications are identical to or more stringent than ASTM specification.

The minimum yield strength SA 336 5A is 344.8 MPa and that SA 182 F5A is 448.2 MPa. Hence you can not use the standard ratings. You have to design flamnge as per Appendix-2 of ASME VIII-1

Thank you for the replies gentlemen! As a follow up question, in 1981, the 16.5 Code had an appendix that allowed you to use other materials, and gave a pressure rating question. Are you familiar at all with that?
