Hello,

I'm removing rust from leaf springs by electrolysis.

The spring is the cathode, the anode is stainless steel, the liquid is a 10% solution of sodium hypochlorite. 5 amp current for around 24 hrs seems to remove the rust.

The question is, is there a risk of hydrogen embrittlement to the spring and a subsequent cracking failure?

Regards George

Yes there is a risk! By making the spring the cathode you are charging it full of hydrogen. Stick to a mechanical rust removal process like grit blasting.

Thank you for the reply swall. :-)

Seems I just was lucky the past thirty years. I will now refrain from the process (and recommending it).

Thank you so much.

best regards George

Well, JK, that beats the crap 'outa 'media blasting'!
