Hello,

I am working on an normal fluid service expansion joint assembly built to B31.3 If I use seamed pipe, such as A53 pipe, does the seam count as a butt weld that must be radiographed?

Thank you!

No.

LittleInch, thank you for your response. Do you have any data to that I could review to validate your response? RT is not required to fulfill the A53 spec, therefore, would it not be the same as me fabricating it and welding it myself? ASME B31.3 does not differentiate between who is doing the weld.

The code does differentiate between who completes the weld. It assumes pipe is supplied with associated NDE completed. No additional NDE is required if the designer utilizes the joint quality factor associated with the pipe. Additional NDE may be completed to provide a higher joint quality factor.

Refer to Table 302.3.4.

In Table 302.3.4 ee NOTE: (1) It is not permitted to increase the joint quality factor by additional examination for joint 1 or 2.

Regards
