round rim edge mate against ball surface

I have a tricky stuff never solved for years.

for example, you have a cylinder cup, and a basketball.

you have the axis for both cylinder cup and the ball.

now you need to mate their axis first, then secondly, put the cup edge (circle) just 'stick' on the ball surface, then the assembly will be complete confined.

however, I was never been able to pick a round edge to 'mate' a ball surface.

Is this possible? Do I must make some 'supporting' points, line or or datums to get his 'mate' done?

Anyone have a solution would be appreciated.

If I understand correctly you could put a point (in the part model) at the intersection of the edge of the cup and a datum plane of the cup. Now, align your axis between the ball and cup and then use point on surface constraint to constrain the point to the surface of the ball. This constrains motion now in two directions. Lastly, constrain the rotation about the axis by aligning two planes to stay parallel.

Pro/E wont allow you to Mate curved edges.

What you can do is make a revolved surface on the rim part (let's call it Surface A), and then use MATE with Surface A and with the ball geometry. You will need a second contraint just to lock the position.

Place the Surface A on a layer, and hide it.

I would use Top Down Design.
Create a skelelton with curves which represent each component and the way they assemble, copy geom into the parts.
Assembly is easy, just default constraint.
