Happy Thursday

Can anybody point to a good reference for the detailing/drawing of simple shear tab connections for beams framing into round HSS.

Thank you

(EDIT) CIDECT Design Guide 9 for HSS Column Connections. See attached picture (Square not round but not much changes. EDIT - see post below)

Be very careful of thin wall sections using the shear tab detail.

You can through-plate if the wall section is too thin to attach to just the face. But avoid if you can as it costs a lot more.

Depending on the diameter of the HSS column, you may be able to make any number of other typical shear connections work, but usually shear tab or through plate is what I've seen.

Chapter K??? Is that retirement? just found out that if you have your fingers on the wrong keys... you can type a foreign language.

Thank you all for the feedback. Pictures helped a lot regarding the ability to construct it. I'm using 1/2" wall tubing and supporting light loads. I think design guide 9 is 24 for HSS members. Just wanted to make sure I could do a simple tab with out a through plate

Enable's pictures are from the CIDECT design guide 9, not AISC - available for free here: As you noted, it is design guide 24 from AISC.

Dik, chapter K is a reference to the AISC steel manual (AISC 360) chapter that pertains to HSS connections.

Woopsies! Thanks dauwerda for pointing out my mistake!
