I'm using a roadway expansion joint at 75' o/c. Sawcuts are at 15'. Expansion joints are for summer heat.

The roadway is for a mining project and won't see a lot of traffic, but the environment is 'less than friendly'.

Looking at two systems (both have 1" joint):

System 1:
Preformed neoprene with a 2" gap at the surface and 1/2" shoulders for support and nothing below.

System 2:
1" joint with a urethane foam backer rod and 1/2" thick Sika 1c SL recessed 1/2" below the roadway.

Any comments on which should be used, or is there a better joint.

dik...if large temperature swings, I would shy away from the pre-formed joint filler. In my experience, they tend to work their way out. With little traffic, this might be a worse problem because they don't get pushed back down.

Thanks, gentlemen... will run with the hot applied. What is typically used as a backer rod/bar?

dik...agree with cvg's recommendation of hot poured sealant. Provided the material has a record of service for application in the frozen north!!

Thanks, BB... good link.

Ron:
I picked up a bit of info from Wisconson and Michigan DOT's and it was based on this that I was going to use the preformed stuff... it works well, apparently. I've got a call in to see about using an adhesive for securing the neoprene gasket. Work for the joint can wait until spring when it warms up a bit. The joint can be flushed/blown out.

The hot applied seems to be more common and I will check with local DOT's to see what is more common and why. It's also less costly to use...
