We're fabricating a vacuum column made of carbon steel cladded with 410S. Column shall be postweld heat treated due to the thickness according to ASME VIII div.1 CODE UCS-56.
Design temperature is 420 celsius degrees and sulfur content of the fluid is around 3.5%wt.

For a long time, we have used 309L filler metal to restore the clad.

Our client is requiring the use of 410 with low carbon and culombium or niobium stabilized.

We are worried about the problems to use this filler metal in this application: low ductility of the welds, PWHT temperature suitable for 410 S but do not damage carbon steel, etc.

Any experience or opinion shall be welcome. Thanks in advance.

The low carbon 410 ss filler metal should be acceptable for cladding on a carbon steel substrate. This 410 ss filler metal will have increased ductility and lower hardness because the lower carbon content. The presence of Niobium or Columbium would reduce the formation of harmful chromium carbides during PWHT (carbon migration from the higher carbon content substrate to the lower carbon cladding interface).

I would suggest that you contact esab (I have included their web site below). These folks are the leaders in weld cladding applications, and could provide specific guidance for use on carbon steel.
