Request for documents or assistance on mechanical design of conical shaft section in centrifugal pumps

Hello everyone,

I am currently looking for detailed technical documents or studies on the mechanical dimensioning of the conical section of the rotating shaft in centrifugal pumps. Specifically, I need resources explaining the calculation steps, design criteria, as well as the specifications and tolerances applied to this critical part.

If anyone has access to such documents or can point me toward reliable references (articles, reports, theses), I would greatly appreciate your support.

Thank you in advance for your help and expertise!

Best regards,

What do you mean "conical section"?
Hi Artisi,

Thank you for your reply.

To clarify what I meant by "conical section," I’ve attached an image of a centrifugal pump where I’ve highlighted the part I'm referring to in yellow. It’s the tapered (conical) section of the rotating shaft located near the impeller, which typically serves to accommodate the impeller hub or help with axial positioning.

I’m currently seeking detailed guidance on how to mechanically design and dimension this conical/tapered portion:

  • Are there any standard design criteria or tolerances for this area?
  • How is this section usually dimensioned/calculated (e.g., angle, diameter transitions)?
  • Are there any references or standards (API 610, ISO, etc.) that specifically cover the design of this feature?

If you have any documents or insights, I’d be really grateful.

Thanks again for your time and support!

Best regards,

Please check

For the design, since this shaft is very specialized, the suppliers should be consulted. One such supplier is given below:

Parker Hannifin Corp., Hydraulic Pump Div., 14249 Industrial Pkwy., Marysville, OH 43040, (937) 644-3915, www.parker.com
Thank you very much for your helpful response and for sharing the link — the information on tapered shaft end design is quite relevant and gives me a clearer understanding of the general design approach.

Thanks again for taking the time to support me — I truly appreciate it!

Best regards,

Sorry for delay, the conical section is not of the shaft, it's the impeller hub.
