Pump shaft material is ASTM A276 S32760 and is damaged during operation. We have an approved weld procedure from the pump supplier. Can the shaft be repair welded by overlay and machined to bring it back to the original condition? Are there any precautions to be taken while welding duplex ss? or
Is it advisable to just replace the shafts?

Can the pump manufacturer provide references of folks who have made similar repairs satisfactorily?

We had some welded super duplex impellers provided by a big name mixer company crack spontaneously in service. A few repairs were attempted by the mixer company (using a different weld/fabricator supplier, since, as usual, the original fabricator was found to be "bad".
In the end New cast impellers were provided.

Is the damage and repair at one end, or inboard 10% or more ? If inboard I anticipate difficulties straightening the shafts, if they are even straight now.

The pump manufacturer does not recommend weld repair of the shaft.

Induced residual welding stress will greatly reduce the cycles to failure (fatigue cracking). The pump manufacturer is correct in not recommending repair.
