Reinforcing existing joists Part 2 3

I am still trying to follow the calculation for joist reinforcement (Designing with Steel Joist, Joist Girder and Steel Deck by Fisher, West, and Van de Pas).

Example 5.5.2 Joist Reinforcement

Checking the compression diagonal members, the book states L/rx = 38/0.377. Where did they get the 38?

Isn't the 38 equal to the L which is the length of the member in inches?

Agreed. The slenderness ratio is always Length / Radius of Gyration.

It should be the length. I looked at the problem he is asking about and the 38" doesn't look like the correct number for what they are supposed to be calculating.

I knew it should be the length of the member. I think 38" is also the wrong number.

Is there a way to let the authors know?
