ASME Section IV (Heating Boiler) HG-325 references the reinforcement requirements for circular hole openings in flat heads as A = .5dt with the "d" referring to the diameter of the opening. What would be the proper reinforcement for a rectangular opening (assuming the opening does not exceed one half of the head diameter or shortest span as described in HG-307 as described in HG-325.2). For example a 3" x 6" rectangular opening in a 1/2" flat tube sheet? I have seen interpretations using the longest distance inside the opening (diagonal corner to corner) but this can result in some fairly large reinforcement cross sections?
