Hello,

I am trying to determine the shell temperature of a refractory lined casted pipe.

I know inner and outer diameter of the pipe along with the thickness of the refractory lining. There is a flow of hot gas blowing through the inside of the pipe whose properties are all know. The outside shell is only cooled by natural convection.

I am planning to calculate this by taking a cross sectional area of the pipe and doing a 1d heat transfer calculation. I know the inside of the refractory is being heated up by convection from the gas. There will be conduction heat transfer through the refractory and then through the shell of the steel. The outside of the steel will be cooled down by natural convection.

I am just unsure where to start.

It is a common problem, grab a handbook.
The heat loss from the outer shell has a well defined coefficient and you know the ambient...

Suggest we also account for radiant heat transfer from the hot gas if gas temp is high.
