While you guys are great and well informed I still need a source.

So I am looking for an excellent reference book(s) for all things material. Metals, plating, hardness, finishes, pros and cons of each, applicability.

Any recommendations? A society with a good library would work too.

Try the Metals Handbook Desk Edition if you need one book (it is available on-line for free if you are an ASM member.

only 8GB? ;-)

Ed, a star for your books, not you please! I can see Gaskell after a long time, the red volumes of ASM,lots on stainless steels ,envy your collection.

I upgraded to a 32GB stick last year for my digital library.
I also mentor young hoarders on the side.

What sorts of thinks are you guys keeping on your sticks? My personal references all are of the dead tree variety...

mrfailure , I am with you. I like to use pencil and hiliter everywhere on the pages.

AT,

I have a lot of technical papers, journal articles, etc. as digital files. For example, ASM allows members to download a number of documents free every year, so I regularly get conference papers and book chapters. The recent book on failure analysis of heat treated components is very good, and downloading individual chapters is easy.

The EPRI site is a treasure trove of free stuff.

It is also a treasure trove for an EPRI contractor, like myself.
