Does anyone have experience in trying to reduce the evaporation rate of a pond. Is any good information out there?

Not much that you can do that is feasible. Covering, increasing depth, reducing temperature, reducing turbulence, reducing wind, and reducing surface area are all options.

Some municipalities tried a polymer coating floating on the surface of the reservoirs. I do not know if that is still in use.

How about planting trees around it to provide shade and to block wind? Or would the trees just drink up nearby groundwater and do more harm than good?

Some lake municipalities in my area use underground detention systems. They consist of very large conduits ( over 120")and are pricey.
