Recycled Material for Fill

Hi, have you ever used recycled (crushed) glass as fill material. Somebody proposed to use it for fill a site (around 1 to 2 meters) for heavy duty roads. Sizes of particles for crushed glass are 3/16" and 7/16". I do not see how you can properly compact it.... Thanks.

Gap graded materials generally lack stability and do not compact well as you noted. Further, glass particles will likely break down under compaction. Dust created from glass particles can be a health hazard. Use well graded stone base!

Ron, agree. however this material will be used as fill. We will have a good well graded granular material for the base. The glass may be used at deeper zones (deeper than GL-1m) but anyways I would prefer "real" soils...

No, I haven't. It must be out there though, 'cause it made our spec book. I've only been at the DOT for 5 years though.

Any problems with using a nuclear density meter for compaction testing on this material? I've heard of trouble when using crushed concrete in backfill giving erroneous readings.

Fortunately, we use more sand cone, but just curious about the reason of the erroneous reading when using the nuclear gage...
