Hello all,

I am looking for a way to calculate the thickness of the glass component in a rectangular sight glass assembly.
I have found a lot of ways to calculate a round glass but nut a rectangular one.

Thank you for the help.
Jenia.

Well, Roarks has any number of calculations for rectangular plates, I think the problem is going to be the properties of the glass. Said calculations may be applicable only to ductile materials. However I know they are designed some way or another.

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Do you mean a flat sheet of glass used as a site-glass?
Hopefully, you can find some information specific to that application.
If not, in the "Structural engineering- other topics" forum, there have been occasional posts about the design of handrailing with glass panels that may be of interest.
You might also consider if various clear plastics would be usable there.

JStephen, The sight glass is for a pressure tank (4 bar), calculating stress on a plate is easy, I thought that there might be some special considerations for this type of glass and it's clamps.

Beside pressure, PROLONGED application of pressure and temperature are other considerations.

Buy the sightglass. You will waste too many dozen hours trying to "design" one, then hundreds more hours trying to get your one-off designs (done with no experience and no lessons learned) approved, then hundreds more to build it. Your client and your approving agent will not not appreciate such a simple part being a pressure barrier to their operators.
